Project Details
Surface Layer Energetics – The Route to Mixing ((08) T02)
Subject Area
Oceanography
Term
since 2016
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 274762653
The primary goals of T2 are to (i) derive a better process understanding of the important influence of sub-mesoscale and surface wave-driven turbulent processes, (ii) improve our quantification of these effects in the TKE budget, and (iii) assess potential weaknesses and propose modifications to current practice, e.g. for ICON and FESOM. In the third phase, we will use model configurations from global up to meter scale complemented with observations. Including the impact of surface waves, which are an important source for mixing - either by breaking at the surface or by Langmuir turbulence, is therefore a major focus of the third phase.
