Influence of an oral health optimised diet on the subgingival biofilm

In a preliminary study, a four-week dietary change including reduction of carbohydrates and enrichment of Omega-3-fatty acids, Vitamin C, D and fibers, has been able to significantly reduce gingival and periodontal inflammatory parameters. Therefore, the aim of the study described in the proposal is to investigate the influence of the same dietary change on the subgingival biofilm in a prospective, randomised and controlled study. Subgingival plaque samples of 15 participants, taken before and after the dietary change will be analysed with pyrosequencing and compared to control samples of 15 participants who did not change their diet. Furthermore, results are going to be analysed regarding clinical and serological parameters. The application is made within the framework of the "2. Nachwuchsakademie Zahnmedizin".
