Subject Area

Term
from 2016 to 2020
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 181750155
The planned project will study two violent conflicts in the Near East between the end of the 1970s and the early 1990s, namely the Iran-Iraq War and the conflict between the Egyptian regime and jihadists. It will work on the assumption that the heroization processes that took place within the context of these conflicts played an essential role in shaping stereotypes of fighters, martyrs, and national and religious heroism. By analysing the actors and mechanisms of heroization in these conflicts, the project aims to enable a better understanding of these processes.
