Project Details
Expected Heroes: Heroic Waiting in German Literature of the Early 20th Century (D06 [B08])
Subject Area
German Literary and Cultural Studies (Modern German Literature)
Term
from 2016 to 2020
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 181750155
The project is dedicated to the constellation of 'heroic waiting', namely the heroization of waiting itself on the one hand and the projection of messianic expectations on the other. This relationship will be characterized systematically with the help of a typology and differentiated in historical studies on German literature between 1900 and 1939. Special emphasis will be placed first on the reflection of heroic agency in literary waiting scenes, second on the question of the extent to which heroizations of perseverance react to the new temporal regimes of the modern age, and third on the function of the heroic as a means of reflecting on the present.
