We plan to perform precision calculations of the binding energies and g factors of highly charged ions within the Standard Model and beyond. The dominant corrections are those due to quantum electrodynamics (QED), the calculation of which we intend to refine and extend in the case of nonperturbative nuclear Coulomb fields. Furthermore, we will complement the theory by an accurate inclusion of nuclear and hadronic effects. In collaboration with corresponding experimental efforts, this will not only allow one to scrutinize strong-field QED, but a wide range of theories beyond the Standard Model, including ones featuring dark matter.
