Project Details
Elites, residences and cities in the Mongolian Empire. A threefold approach (03)
Subject Area
Prehistory and World Archaeology
Term
from 2016 to 2021
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 257731206
The first approach continues the comparison between two cities of the Mongolian Empire and their respective environs in present-day Mongolia and now focuses on the elites in the urban context. Targeted archaeological excavations within the city of Karakorum and in the northern bordering burial area serve to verify a postulated social topography also using bioarchaeological methods. The second approach takes a diachronic perspective in which the transformation of burial customs from the Bronze Age to the Turko-Mongolian era is to be analyzed. A third approach leads to a transcultural comparison on a large scale.
