The project 'Urban Voids' focusses on a multidisciplinary academic exchange for the development of research methodologies on today's dynamics of urban transition in European and Latin American agglomerations. It is an attempt to critically reflect on the thesis that the labile equilibrium of dynamic and complex spatial environments in urban societies cannot be adequately captured by linear-causal, monodisciplinary and monocultural research approaches. We therefore examine these dynamic interrelations on selected urban sites on two different continents by using the example of the urban 'void' and its interactions as a potential of transformation. The proposed cooperation between the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) and the HafenCity Universität Hamburg (HCU) will be developed in two workshops, one in Buenos Aires and one Hamburg. The workshop participants - eight Latin American and eight European researchers - will be working together with local stakeholders on relevant theoretical and practical perspectives on typologies of Urban Voids and adequate methodological approaches. The workshop format aims at taking into account the local specifics of the two cities and to generate learning effects and new joint research questions through a change of cultural and disciplinary perspectives. The objective of the project is a longterm establishment of an academic cooperation through joint research and the support of young researchers.
