The proposed research project investigates how aggressors process and evaluate the reactions of the targets of their aggression and how processing of these reactions affects subsequent perceptions and action tendencies. Experiments examine effects of verbal and nonverbal (facial) expressions of suffering on retaliatory aggression; the motivational-affective evaluation of outcomes of retaliatory aggression on experiential and neuropsychological levels; the social perception of interpersonal transgressors using reverse-correlation tasks; and how cues associated with particular outcomes influence fight-or-flight decisions. Overall, the project aims at a better understanding of revenge motivation and what reduces revenge seeking most effectively.
