Basic Investigation and Modeling of Three-Dimensional Two Phase Flow through a Compressor Cascade

For industrial gas turbines the injection of water sprays at the inlet of the compressor is used today for power augmentation, which is used for peak load and in addition for the compensation of power fluctuations due to the usage of wind and solar energy. The injected water droplets evaporate during the flight through the compressor and cool the flow. This reduces the compressor work and increases the usable power. In addition the efficiency might be increased also. However, the droplets can lead to massive erosion in the compressor. This is a result of the interaction between the droplets and the compressor blades. So there is a need for optimizing these processes, which is the focus of the here proposed project.The aim of the here proposed project lies in the development of a numerical tool, which is able to simulate reliably the three dimensional processes of water injection by considering all relevant fluid dynamical sub-processes. Both applicants can count for this on a large amount of previous work, which has been done for such processes for two-dimensional flows around compressor profiles. This work has shown that the process cannot fully been described in 2D and thus the investigation of different detailed 3D processes is needed. The experimental and numerical investigation, modelling and the consideration of these sub-processes are the focal point of the here proposed project.
