This proposal addresses the extension and generalization of coding and equalization for fiber-optical channels to pre-equalization (precoding) and signal shaping schemes. Similar to, e.g., DSL broadband access, transmitter-side pre-equalization (precoding) and signal shaping should also be used in optical transmission. In view of the nonlinear behavior an in-depth assessment of these methods must be conduced and they have to be suitably adapted to the fiber-optical channel. In addition, precoding and shaping must be seamlessly integrated into the topology of future dynamic networks. For this purpose suitable monitoring methods have to be developed to support the precoding and shaping methods. The interaction of telemetry data obtained at both the network layer and the transport layer should be optimized to improve the performance of future optical networks. Special focus will be given to flexibility and adaptivity in the context of dynamic network operation.
