Project Details
Experimental constraints on volatile element partitioning during core formation on the terrestrial planets (C01)
Subject Area
Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry
Term
since 2016
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 263649064
A crucial event in the early history of the terrestrial planets was their differentiation into a metallic core and a silicate mantle. This project aims to investigate the partitioning of volatile elements between metal and silicate in order to implement these elements into quantitative chemical models of core formation. The main goal of this project is to determine as to whether moderately volatile elements were accreted early and, thus, exhibit a signature of core formation, or if, alternatively, they were accreted late, during the vaning stages of core formation, in which case there abundances would not be strongly modified by core formation.
