Final Report Abstract

Although the molecular recognition of host and guest molecules is a classic domain of supramolecular chemistry, unexpected new developments and opportunities occur frequently. In this project we investigated inclusion complexes of cyclodextrins (cyclic carbohydrates) and nanodiamonds (compact, diamondoid hydrocarbons) which fit like lock and key due to their matching molecular structure and spontaneously form a strong yet non-covalent bond in aqueous solution. By variation of the structure of the cyclodextrins and the nanodiamonds, we have confirmed that the hydrophobic effect determines the affinity and selectivity of the interaction. Furthermore, we have used the host-guest interaction of cyclodextrins and nanodiamonds as a binding motif in supramolecular nanomaterials that self- assemble in water. Unfortunately, the water solubility of the nanodiamonds is very limited.
