The proposed project provides a novel combination of palladium catalyzed gas activation and enantioselective organocatalysis. This approach allows the formation of chiral 1,3-dicarbonyls from readily available aryl halides, gaseous CO and carbonyl compounds. Our new approach will combine the advantages of both catalytic systems, the capability of palladium to activate unsaturated molecular CO and the possibility to introduce stereo information by chiral organocatalysis. It is anticipated that, through a dual catalysis approach, milder reaction conditions are employed, providing also the possibility to react aldehydes with reduced risk of self-aldol condensation or deformylation reactions. Finally, the developed method will be applied to unsaturated carbonyl compounds in the preparation of 2,3-dihydroquinolones, containing an asymmetric center at 2- and 3 positions.
