The Priority Programme 1593 (SPP1593) has been established to investigate foundational methodologies and approaches to develop, operate and maintain long-living software systems, sustaining high quality and supporting evolution during the whole life cycle. Existing approaches do not solve the severe current problems with legacy software, the adaptation of software to new platforms and the continuous evolution of software systems with respect to continuously changing requirements, new emerging technologies, and integration of new software, hardware and system components. Our aim is to understand which information must be kept during software development to ease software evolution and how to gain this information as lightweight as possible and how to use it most effectively to support continuous evolution of software and software/hardware systems, thus making systems adaptable to changing requirements and environments. To stay close to application, we focus on two particular application domains: business information systems and production systems in automation engineering. The project Scientific Coordination of SPP 1593 is extended to continue the scientific, organisational and technical support for all projects of the SPP1593. Besides the general scientific guidance, the administration of IT infrastructures as well as the preparation and management of events are within the working area of the project. Furthermore, the project is responsible for supporting inter-project collaborations, e.g., on common case studies, the international visibility of the SPP1593 as such, as well as the documentation of results to take care of sustainability of research results beyond the end of the second funding period.
