Understanding the dynamical impact of Aeolus observations (A03)

The project investigates the impact of the novel Aeolus satellite on the midlatitude forecast skill by analyzing global ECMWF and DWD assimilation and forecast experiments with and without Aeolus observations. We combine a statistical, systematic analysis in a jet stream-relative framework with an investigation of the investigate the cases of strongest forecast improvements to identify pathways for significant forecast error reduction through additional observations that can guide the future progress of observing and numerical weather prediction systems.
