Project Details
New Zwitterionic Polymers "Low-fouling" Surfaces
Subject Area
Preparatory and Physical Chemistry of Polymers
Term
from 2015 to 2020
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 279753164
The project addresses the antifouling properties of polymeric surfaces, in particular of zwitterionic ones, in aqueous environments. Novel zwitterionic polymer architectures will thus be designed, synthesized, and investigated with respect to their non-fouling properties. Therefore, zwitterionic polymers will be synthesized and characterized regarding their non-fouling properties. We will focus on highly crosslinked and weakly amphiphilic polysulfobetaines and – carboxybetaines. By this, the previously observed susceptibility against silt uptake while maintaining the ultralow-fouling properties in laboratory assays will be reduced. Also, the hitherto realized zwitterionic structures will be further extended. Systematically varied series of polymers will allow to reveal fundamental relationships between the structure of the polymers and their antifouling and anti-sediment properties.
