In full waveform inversion (FWI), we reconstruct subsurface material parameters from seismic measurements. The corresponding mathematical task is the solution of an ill-posed nonlinear parameter identification problem for the viscoelastic wave equation. Our applied as well as theoretical research on FWI will include these topics: (1) Models for wave propagation in anisotropic viscoelastic media. (2) Theoretical foundation and advancement of inverse solvers accounting for the special structure of FWI. (3) Inversion of our own and external field measurements to test the conceptual work of (1) and (2).
