Depolarization waves are described by the basic model for the cardiac reaction-diffusion system, where the equation for the electrical potential is coupled with the evolution of ionic concentrations and gating variables. Our goal is to improve the numerical efficiency of the approximation by employing numerical schemes and solvers which are tailored to our particular problem class. We will mathematically characterize and apply a reentrant reaction eikonal scheme for the simulation of chaotic fibrillatory waves, and we will identify model parameters in a patient-specific manner, which paves the way for the clinical adoption of painless overdrive pacing against atrial fibrillation.
