For elastic and electromagnetic wave equations in dissipative and dispersive media, we aim to develop fully adaptive space-time discretizations with integrated efficient and reliable error control and efficient implicit solution methods of (at least numerically validated) almost optimal complexity and parallel scalability. We use discontinuous Galerkin methods in space and time for the wave equation formulation as first-order system with generalized material laws including, e.g., convolutions in space and time. The modeling error is estimated in space and time by realizing a flexible model hierarchy.
