Within the SFB 749 we aim to develop new HTI and HI based photoswitches with strongly redshifted absorption (>500 nm), while maintaining a high thermal stability of the metastable E isomeric state. The first studies of chiral HI derivatives will also be undertaken. In addition we plan to investigate the supramolecular binding of HTIs to DNA and how DNA hybridization can be photocontrolled. To this end, we will substituted the core structure of HTI with intercalation motives and DNA bases. In this context we will also study how the rigid environment of DNA influences the photoisomerization process.
