Quantitative Models for Visual Abstraction (A04)

Subject Area Image and Language Processing, Computer Graphics and Visualisation, Human Computer Interaction, Ubiquitous and Wearable Computing
Term from 2015 to 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 251654672

The field of non-photorealistic rendering is concerned with the automatic creation of a wide variety of expressive styles, often inspired by real artists. An evaluation of these abstract renditions is challenging and often very subjective. In this project, we want to investigate how to compute abstract visual representations, in particular abstract styles, with a quantitatively defined degree of abstraction. Since human perception has a large influence on the process of visual abstraction, we will investigate how saliency information and eye tracking can be employed for this. We want to test and apply our quantitative abstraction results in virtual environments, where abstraction is necessary due to performance reasons.
