The function of the Supernatural in the Process of Imperial Decision-Making in Byzantium (6th to 12th centuries) (C11 [C02])

Subject Area Asian Studies
Term from 2015 to 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 252080619

In Byzantine military tactical and historiographical sources from the 6th to the 12th century, decision-making is understood as a well-considered, serious and momentous action by the commander and is even addressed on an abstract level. Military decision-making is steered and at the same time restricted by the temporal dimension (from the preparation for war to the beginning of battle), in particular. Time management and appropriate success strategies are optimized by the inclusion of knowledge resources (consulting, information procurement, espionage).
