GRK 792:  Nonlinear Optics and Ultra-Short-Time Physics

Subject Area Optics, Quantum Optics and Physics of Atoms, Molecules and Plasmas
Term from 2002 to 2011
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 273471

Lasers and laser applications are an important key to most areas of basic and applied research and development. The skills required for such work will be trained through both the research and the educational program of the college. The research program is organized in the four segments laser physics, non-linear optics, ultra-short-time physics and quantum optics. It deals with problems related to the development of modern diode lasers and with new methods for frequency conversion in non-linear optics and quantum optics or, to give another example, with pulse propagation in photonic crystals. Other projects deal with ultra fast processes probed by femto-second laser pulses in thin, mainly magnetized, films.
The educational program aims at an in-depth training in those topics, which are central to the research efforts. Central elements are the scientific research seminar, a seminar organized by the students of the college themselves, and a special lecture course given by the professors involved in the college emphasizing the basic concepts relevant for the research program. Furthermore the students work with their colleagues on other research projects in another research team for one or two weeks to learn about other research themes and techniques.
