Strategic research plans are realized only in a few large companies. Generally, financial and time pressure do not allow long-time research and development projects. This is disadvantageous not only for the economy but also for the research. On the other side, in many firms there exist scientists who possess concrete visions about relevant mathematical research questions, but do not have the possibility to realize them. Additionally, it is necessary to enlarge
the motivation of the best absolvents to work within PhD-programms.
Our research training group mainly focusses to create a bridge
between the academic research and the requirements of the practice, from the scientific as well as from the human point of view. The close collaboration with associated scientists from practice influences efficiently the basic mathematical research (which should essentially contribute to the solution of concrete practical problems), and also allows a direct knowledge transfer between the University and the companies. The partners from different institutions and firms contribute to the formulation of concrete research topics of practical interest and support the work of the doctoral students with respect to the practical aspects. The latter gain an earlier insight in the practice, which should act positively also within their future work.
