Soft condensed matter science is an increasingly important interdisciplinary field of research. Its major concern is a better understanding of the macroscopic physical properties of various generally disordered and heterogeneous materials such as colloidal suspensions, polymer solutions and gels, emulsions, liquid crystals, granular media, foams and most biological matter. The research program of the international research training group concerns four strongly interconnected areas:
(A) Interacting biological structures (biopolymers, DNA, protein crystals, protein folding, membranes, adhesion),
(B) Foams, granular matter and liquid crystals (flow behaviour, rheology, multiple light scattering),
(C) Novel polymer materials (ionic transport, polymer-colloid-nano-aggregates, polymer melts on surfaces),
(D) Colloids as model systems (phase behaviour at surfaces, effective interaction, colloidal crystals).
