GRK 463:  Spectroscopy of Localized Atomic Systems. Fields and Localized Atoms ? Atoms and Localized Fields

Subject Area Condensed Matter Physics
Term from 1999 to 2005
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 272543

The research training group "Spectroscopy of Localized Atomic Systems" at the faculty of physics at the University of Hamburg connects the fields of atomic physics, solid-state physics, laser physics, and quantum optics. The research work of the members of the research training group is combined with supplemental lectures, seminars, and workshops in order to achieve an outstanding education and a deep knowledge in a broad research field. The curriculum particularily focuses on the traditionally strong spectroscopic activities at the University of Hamburg. The research training group contains five main topics. The research groups apply various spectroscopic methods for the investigation of: -- Localized single atoms in optical traps: "Light interaction with single localized atomic particles".-- Localized atoms in light lattices: "Optical crystals - cold atoms in periodic potentials".-- Localized atoms on solid-state surfaces: "Resonant and spin-resolved photo-electron-spectroscopy and raster-tunnel microscopy on adsorbed rare-earth atoms".-- Localized atoms in crystals: "Spectroscopic properties and relaxation processes of localized atoms in crystals, matrices, and clusters".-- Atoms in semiconducting microcavities: "Spectroscopy of atom-like excitations in microcavities".These systems can be used in the fields of quantum optics, laser physics, and optoelectronics. Graduates of the research training group have excellent chances to find a job in these modern growing fields.
