Project Details
GRK 410: Physik and Technology of Accelerators
Subject Area
Particles, Nuclei and Fields
Term
from 1997 to 2006
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 272219
The main aim of this research training group is to bundle effectively the since a long time well established research and development as well as teaching activities at the Darmstadt University of Technology (TUD), the Heavy Ion Research Center at Darmstadt (GSI) and the Universities of Frankfurt and Mainz in the field of Physics and Technology of Accelerators. At those institutions various aspects of the production, acceleration and the beam transport of the lightest particles, the electrons, up to the heaviest ions are investigated, both from the point of modern accelerator theory and from a very practical point, i.e. the further development of existing accelerators: the superconducting electron linear accelerator S-DALINAC at TUD, the normal conducting electron microtron MAMI at Mainz and the Linac/Synchrotron/Storage Ring accelerator complex at GSI. This concentration of various types of modern particle accelerators within a small geographical area makes the postgraduate course very attractive for students and postdoctoral fellows with respect to independent research and to advanced teaching. The latter which consists of special lectures, seminars, colloquia, laboratory courses and excursions to laboratories dealing with accelerator related problems in research and engineering, involving not only those who carry this postgraduate course but also distinguished scientists from all over the world.
