GRK 303:  Infection and Immunity

Subject Area Basic Research in Biology and Medicine
Term from 1997 to 2005
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 271719

The research training group of "Infection and Immunity" is focussed on the pathogenesis of infectious disease with particular emphasis on molecular and cellular aspects of host-pathogen interaction. This topic requires an interdisciplinary approach which is achieved by including lecturers and senior researchers of Virology (Herpesvirus, HIV) Bacteriology (Yersinia enterocolitica, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Borrelia burgdorferi, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Legionella pneumophila), Mycology (Candida albicans, Aspergillus fumigatus), Cellular Microbiology, Cell Biology, Immunology, Pathology, Neurology and Dermatology. The training program comprises (i) an introducing part for all research projects to make the choice of the project easier for the students, (ii) a seminar on methods and techniques of molecular infection biology, (iii) a lecture on 'Molecular Infection Biology' and (iv) short-term practical courses to broaden the horizon of the graduate students. As the students are recruited from diverse faculties (Biology, Pharmacy, Human and Veterinary Medicine) tight contact between graduate students and medical students is required to support the interdisciplinary cooperation and to compensate training deficits.
