Primarily, the project aims at the development of new material models of technical and biological structures. Such models to be created on the basis of an "effective medium theory" are supposed to close the existing gaps in the literature concerning dielectric material parameters (permittivity and conductivity) in the mm- and sub-mm-wave region (ca. 30 GHz to 10 THz). Within the scope of the project, the thus obtained data are then to be used in numerical computer simulations. In order to demonstrate the breadth of applications of the material models, but also to work out the limits of the procedure, two very different subject areas shall be treated: on the one hand human tissue shall be the electromagnetically exposed at THz frequencies (sub-mm waves) to assess the suitability of the new material models. On the other hand, high-precision models of fibre reinforced composite materials with and without local defects shall be developed and irradiated by mm- and sub-mm sources, in order to compare field modifications in front of and/or behind the test structure, but also within the material models. This is to enable an analysis of the causes of deficient diagnoses which were reported in connection with the non-destructive testing on the basis of imaging systems.
