ERA_Chemistry_Biomimetic formation and organization of magnetite nanoparticles
Final Report Abstract
In this project we produced new scientific results along the following lines: Genetically engineered mutant bacterial filaments with specifically designed functional sites on their surfaces. These filaments were then used as templates for the attachment and nucleation of magnetic nanoparticles. As such, we produced the intended materials (1D magnetic structures, in particular magnetic nanofibers), and concomitantly gained new knowledge both on the functions of the Mms6 and MamI proteins in magnetotactic bacteria and on the nucleation of crystalline nanoparticles from solutions in general. Synthesis, structural and magnetic characterization of magnetic mesocrystals and their organization. We proposed a mechanistic framework for the formation of these crystals and determined their structure / (magnetic) function relationship. In addition, we showed how the size of the particles can be varied using varying pH conditions.
