Ocean engineering encompasses a wide variety of areas, either concerned with the underlying essential theory or focused on the application in practice. Hence, the fundamental aim of this postgraduate course is interdisciplinary and interdepartmental teamwork of young mathematicians and engineers who jointly develop new models, establish the mathematical background and translate these models to numerical simulations. Major research topics of the program are fluid loads on marine structures, the dynamic behavior of those systems, and the identification, evaluation and retrofit of damaged underwater structures. The individual research activities of the program participants, all directed towards a PhD, are strongly supported and assisted by customized extensive seminar program. Special emphasis is placed on the ability of recognizing correlations and relationships, perceiving the overall context, employing high-end computation tools and computers, and utilizing state-of-the-art software systems for multiple aspects in construction, material science, damage detection and evaluation, fatigue life analyses, robotic, hydrodynamics and foundations.
