Dynamically adaptive computational grids allow for the simulation of significantly larger domains in space and time. Tree-structured grids are particularly memory-efficient and easy to parallelize. The challenge is adopt such grids in a minimally invasive way for existing simulation software without loosing too much of their inherent efficiency. D.8 develops and implements such an integration concept for examples within the SFB. This requires new developments in terms of modelling, discretization, data structures and data access, parallelization, and visualization.
