Photonic circuits for single rare-earth emitters
Final Report Abstract
The main goal of the project was to devise a scalable way of producing on-chip photonic structures for rare-earth emitters. The most important structures are high-finesse optical resonators of low mode volume with the aim of realization of rare-earth-based cavity quantum electrodynamics system with strong coupling regime between the resonator and the rare-earth ions. Within the framework of the project, on-chip whispering gallery cavities with high quality factor (Q>150000) and low mode volume (V<303) were demonstrated using thin films of amorphous titania (TiO2) and lithium niobate (LiNbO3). The latter was also shown to be widely electrically tunable (>200GHz). Coupling of various rare-earth emitters produced by ion implantation to the cavities was demonstrated. The implantation yield of rare-earth ions was assessed and appeared to be unprecedentedly high (up to 91%). Coherent optical and spin properties of implanted and native rare-earth ions in crystals were studied. The combined results of the project show excellent potential of rare-earth-based cavity QED systems as quantum computer qubits as well as single photon sources for quantum communication.
