The aim of this research project is the development of a new manufacturing process for producing compo-nents with a radial graded layer system. This new manufacturing process has the ability to produce specifi-cally adapted components or semi-finished products. This should be realized by a superposition of the centrifugal force and the segregation effect. For this purpose, an experimental setup is developed with a rotating cylindrical die for powder pressing, which is simultaneously superimposed with a vibration. Caused by the separation (segregation) the smaller particles move to the edge area, whereas the larger particles concentrate at the center of the cylinder. For the experimental tests different aluminum-based metal matrix composite powder mixtures will be used. The matrix material (aluminum powder) and the ceramic reinforcing phase (SiC) particles differ in their particle size. The controlled segregation leads to an increasing fraction of the ceramic reinforcing particles in the edge of the part.Within this research project, the effects of different process variables (geometry and size distribution of the powder, amplitude and frequency of vibration, rotation speed) are investigated for analysis of the develop-ment of the radial graded powder system.
