Piezo health monitoring of adhesive joints
Mechanics
Final Report Abstract
The idea pursued here is to set up an analytical model and to find the interface debonding for a overlap zone of a smart hygrothermalelectric single lap joint under static and dynamic time harmonic load and the influence from the environment. In both cases of combined loading the debond length in the overlap zone is studied in detail. Then, it becomes possible to determine the value of the combined load at which the elastic-brittle interface delamination begins to grow up as a function of the mechanical and electric external loads. Respective numerical examples are given for problems of hygrothermapiezoelectric, piezoelectric, thermalpiezoelectric behaviours of the considered structure under static and dynamic time harmonic load, illustrated by figures and discussed. Special attention is paid to the influence of the environment conditions on the behavior of the debond length in the overlap zone. A possible criterion for detection of the debond length through the value of the electric gradient is proposed. Such a criterion could help easily to measure the delamination in practice.
