In recent years, it has become clear that in addition to symmetry, topology plays a crucial role in classifying the phases of matter. In topological phases, defects are frequently associated with interesting and important physics. In the present project we propose to study the interplay of topological phases and magnetic impurities. We will focus on the following contexts: (I) helical edge states of systems in the quantum spin-Hall effect, (ii) topological superconductors supporting Majorana fermions, (iii) Shiba bound states in superconductors, (iv) Weyl semimetals.
