During my visit at the University of California, Irvine I intend to write two articles that are related to my dissertation by the title of "Corruption in Europe in Comparative Perspective" which I have submitted at Leuphana University Lüneburg in July of this year. The defense of the dissertation is scheduled for December of 2013. First, I plan to publish an article which focuses on the conceptual framework of the thesis and its implications for empirical outcomes. The conceptual framework is based on a so-called bathtub model of corruption that integrates several theoretical perspectives (e.g. economic approaches such as principal-agent-models and cultural approaches such as sociological and historical institutionalism) and enables scholars to focus on country and individual characteristics when studying corruption. Secondly, I plan to publish an article that presents the empirical results of my thesis. My PhD project is linked to the research theme of the Center for the Study of Democracy that focuses on challenges that democracies are confronted with, such as the tension between legitimacy and performance as conflicting requirements. The Center for the Study of Democracy at Leuphana University Lüneburg and the Center for the Study of Democracy at the University of California, Irvine both conduct research on democratic structures and procedures in politics, society, economics and the environment. The central focus of research is on questions of legitimacy and performance of democracy in the 21st century. In Irvine Prof. Russell Dalton will be my supervisor. Professor Dalton is an internationally renowned scholar in the field of democracy research. Moreover I will have the opportunity to participate in the university's conferences and seminars and will be able to continue building my academic network. Working at the University of California in Irvine would give me the opportunity to get in contact with other scholars, prepare publications (i.e. two articles extracted from my PhD thesis) and help to enhance international cooperation in the field of democracy research by exchanging research ideas and projects.
