Project Details
Femtosekundenlasersystem (TIERUS)
Subject Area
Condensed Matter Physics
Term
Funded in 2014
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 255537021
The core expertise and interest of the research group are the dynamical processes in condensed matter, a topic of high current international interest. The TIERUS experiment is crucial to the mission of the group, and will enable the group to address key questions in the field concerning optically induced phenomena in matter, including symmetry and population statistics aspects. It will form one of the core experiments in the group in Cologne after the move of Prof. van Loosdrecht from Groningen to Cologne. TIERUS will open a new dynamic avenue to the research on advanced materials in Cologne, and will significantly strengthen Cologne¿s position in correlated and complex matter. Currently there is no similar equipment available at the University of Cologne, and the TIERUS instrument will be complementary to the already existing expertise and equipment for structure determination, thermodynamic and transport properties, and static spectroscopies within the II. Physikalische Institut. Furthermore it will form a new nucleus in the recently established excellence initiative ''Quantum matter and Materials'', and is expected to substantially strengthen the ties between the physics and chemistry departments of the University of Cologne.
