We want to find out if and how experimentally accessible hard and soft information can be combined into a physics-based quantitative representation of field-scale soil hydrology, given the situation that process models, material properties, forcings, and observations are all incomplete and inaccurate to some degree. We approach this along three synergistic lines: (i) hydraulic experiments at a fully controlled artificial and at a natural test site, (ii) high-precision GPR- and TDR-measurements, (iii) constructive inversion and data assimilation.
