Subject Area

MAX phase thin films have gained increased attention as promision coating systems for high temperature applications and erosive loads. Due to their nanolaminate structure, MAX phases combine metallic and ceramic properties. The general goal of this study is focussed on knowledge-based fabrication of Cr2AlC MAX phase coatings via dc-Arc-PVD, their microstructure characterization as well as chemical and structural modification to improve oxidation resistance. Erosion tests shall give further information on their suitability for practical applications. Research is particularly focussed on the dependence of MAX phase coating structure on the processing parameters, the effect of coating structure on physical and mechanical/technological properties as well as on the oxidation behavior of Arc-PVD Cr2AlC coatings. Erosion resistance of the coatings will be investigated as well. The work planned will significantly widen the current knowledge of structural aspects of coating formation. Also the work will provide valuable information for future industrial application such as protective coatings in gas turbines or highly loaded electrical contacts. Research work is strongly interactive between the two groups involved.
