The project investigates personnel decisions regarding military leadership roles in Byzantium from the 9th to the 14th century, with a particular emphasis on failed decisions. It is particularly interested in the interaction between social, political and military caesuras on the one hand and changes in the modes of military personnel decisions on the other.
