lt is the clear objective of Priority Programme 1688 to benefit from the possibilities of a network structure and, at the same time, to minimise the potentially negative effects thereof. This will enable us to achieve considerably better results than a mere accumulation of individual studies could. The coordination project seeks to provide an infrastructure that will enable the affiliated scholars, who work together from different geographical locations, to combine their intensive individual research with a productive cooperation with leading experts in the field. Apart from internet-based collaboration, a number of meetings (annual conferences, workshops) will therefore be held on the different organisational Ievels within this Priority Programme to enable a continuous exchange of ideas between project-internal and -external scholars. ln order to facilitate this kind of exchange, measures to present and visualise our interests have to be taken; platforms as well as communication channels need to be created that allow and assist continuous collaborations across long distances. These objectives not only require substantial funding for events, publications and the website's maintenance but also for an efficient deployment of personnel. While pursuing their own projects, two senior researchers will hold the key positions in the overall coordination of the Priority Programme and will provide guidance and advice on content-related and organisational matters; a secretary and two assistants will undertake further administrative tasks. As far as the public image of the project and an internal advancement and support are concerned, the endeavours of the coordination project are complemented by initiatives for public relations, start-up funding for follow-up projects granted to outstanding doctoral candidates and measures to promote equal opportunities.
