Fluid mechanical research in the field of interaction of flows with highly porous / permeable surface layers carries a high potential for innovation. It is expected that new possibilities of drag reduction, energy saving, noise reduction and vibration damping can be achieved. Unfortunately, in this area the knowledge is lacking even for simple geometries, such as flow around completely or partially porous coated cylinders, cuboids or spheres. Therefore, within this project, the flow around cylindrical bodies which are coated partially with porous, permeable thin surface layers shall be investigated. The aim of the project is to elaborate the basic knowledge of drag reduction of circular and square cylinders by porous coating and to define dimensionless numbers by reanalysis of measurement data, which control the problem and allow to transfer results to other scales (similarity rules).
