This project focusses on comparison of late Middle Palaeolithic and Early Upper Palaeolithic assemblages (OIS 3, transition Neanderthals and Modern humans) of the Côte Chalonnaise (region around Chalon-sur-Saône, eastern France). The aim of the project is to discuss development and contrast of technological know-how, mobility, subsistence strategies in consideration with climate and environmental data from OIS 3. The archaeological record is palaeohistorically and palethnologically analysed and interpreted and put in a chronological framework. The Verpillière caves in Germolles are the major sites, which are correlated with other sites in the circulating area. The main focus of studies lays on lithic technology, site-formation processes, dating, and GIS-based reconstruction of the palaeolithic territories. This renewal proposal serves to further narrow the research gap of our work area (situated between other palaeolithic regions such as Swabian Jura, Rhineland, Paris Basin, Aquitaine and the Rhône Valley). The preliminary results of the project need to be tested, compiled (GIS), compared, evaluated and to be published for discussion.
