Project C5 challenges the central dogma in the Candida research community which holds that C. albicans is not a natural colonizer of mice and that the gut microbiota of mice causes colonization resistance. The mechanisms by which diet influences colonization remain unclear and will thus be investigated in the third funding period. Since B-cell-depleted mice are highly susceptible to systemic candidiasis, C5 will explore how different B-cell functions impact systemic candidiasis, using knockout mice and mixed bone marrow chimeras.
