Project C1 showed that translocation requires several fungal factors, including the toxin candidalysin. Processing of the candidalysin precursor Ece1 and transcriptional regulation of the ECE1 gene, as well as the virulence (host damage, immunopathology) and avirulence functions (protective immune response) of candidalysin were explored and regulatory networks dissected. C1 will extend its investigations into three aspects: (i) the molecular characterization of the invasive form of C. albicans, (ii) the molecular dissection of C. albicans from translocation to dissemination, and (iii) the impact of immunotherapy on C. albicans colonization, infection, and translocation.
