In this project, a new interpretation software for the multidimensional modeling (2D inversion, 3D forward modeling) of magnetotelluric and radiomagnetotelluric data will be developed in contrast to the traditional numerical methods like the finite elements or finite differences. The method for solving the partial differential equation is based on a meshfree technique which avoids a discretization grid. The main goal of this project is to optimize a two-dimensional, meshfree magnetotelluric forward algorithm which was developed in the frame of a master thesis at the University of Cologne. This software will be extended to a 3D forward magnetotelluric modeling algorithm. In addition, the meshfree method will be implemented in a 2D inversion algotihm which will benefit from this new method. The new software will be tested on synthetic and real data sets and will be run-time optimized. In this way, an effective and accurate reconstruction of multidimensional earth resistivity structures will be possible.
