This mostly synthetic/experimental project is targeted at the preparation of novel magnetic and luminescent materials belonging to the class of solid-state rare-earth cyanamide and carbodiimide compounds containing Ln-NCN2- structural fragments. It will be based on our recently developed flux route employing the simple rare-earth halides as well as alkali-metal cyanides and azides as precursors. We plan to further enrich the europium-related synthetic contributions, characterize other new compounds using X-ray diffraction methods, and rationalize their compositions and also structural properties by means of electronic structure calculations. In addition, the synthetic approach will be extended to some of the other rare-earth elements. Eventually, a couple of new materials containing various rare-earth elements or doped variants of these phases will be synthesized. Physical characterization, in particular magnetic measurements as well as the examination of their luminescence properties, will be another major focus of this project.
