Hybrid hydrogel/magnetic nanoparticle composites exhibit large reversible shape changes when exposed to appropriate external magnetic fields. Combining properties of soft and hard matter, these new "smart" materials show great promise for a plethora of applications in biomedical sciences, like cell stretching or stimulated tissue regeneration. After synthesis of the components and basic function has been demonstrated in funding periods 1 and 2, respectively, application within the area of biomedicine will be in the center of the present proposal. This includes construction of bioactuators as well as a drug release system, that will be useful in the area of regenerative medicine.
