The unconventional superconductivity and other interesting electronic properties of iron pnictides are mainly caused by their unique electronic structure and the Coulomb interaction between electrons in the iron 3d-orbitals. For the investigation of the iron pnictides, we shall employ a recently developed variational method with which we have successfully investigated the correlation-induced superconductivity in single-band Hubbard models. We shall combine our method with realistic multiband models of the electronic structure of iron pnictides. Our method shall provide valuable insights into the superconducting order and the appearance of ‘nematic’ phases with broken rotational symmetry since it is sensibly more accurate and controlled than phenomenological and many-body methods employed in the field so far.
